Dragon*Con, 2013

I’ll be attending Dragon*Con, August 30 – September 2. See you there.

And in other news: just finished drafting a new story on the 17th, with many more currently on the synopsis-horizon.

Writers of the Future, Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention for “Brownspace,” in the Writers of the Future contest, 2nd quarter, 2012.

Dragon*Con, 2012

I’ll be attending Dragon*Con, August 31 – September 3. See you there.

2011 Aeon Award, 4th round shortlist

Looks like an early draft of my “Beyond the City of Ice” made the shortlist, posted on the Albedo One home page. Fingers crossed.

Phonebooth removal

Snapped this photo on the way over the Lambro river as it reminded me of “Spare Change.” Superheroes, you have eleven days and counting until “this cabin will be removed.”

Writers of the Future, semi-finalist

My short story “Venexia Nova” made the semi finals of the Writers of the Future contest, 1st quarter 2011. I was quite surprised since Venexia is the second story I ever finished writing. Unfortunately it didn’t make the finals, but I found the judge’s feedback quite informative just the same; and also quite welcome, which brings me to this muttering:

So often it seems we’re writing in the dark, with no feedback, no external perspective on what we’re doing–we, the rising “talent” of today. Sure, there are more venues–i.e., edited publications–for peer-reviewed work, and so many options for self-publishing, these days. But I’ve got this idea that in a once-upon-a-time pulp fiction, editors would actually communicate with new talent, would respond, would make suggestions for revision. At least the stories and legends we’ve been handed down by our elders in the field read like that.

Spare Change

My short sf story, “Spare Change,” is due in issue #15 (February, 2011) of Murky Depths under the byline Jon T. Cook.

Why release a new blog in 2010?

Because the future was here, and went its merry way downstream, into the mists of time; and so we give a cheery sea-burial to all dead media, still-born perhaps, that yet wash up on these shores.

In other words: because a weblog seemed the best way to bring diverse elements together on one page.
